AFC Challenge League: Svay Rieng Shows It, Madura Secures It

On the third match day of the AFC Challenge League, Ulaanbaatar’s fans were expected to pack the MFF Stadium to back Svay Rieng, as their victory was essential to keep Mongolia’s champions SP Falcons FC in the tournament. Yet with only 83 spectators, mostly officials in the VIP area, the turnout suggested a lack of faith in the hosts’ chances.

First Half

The game started with balanced forward play from both teams, though without real danger until the 12th minute, when Madura United’s Maxuel (#9) struck first after a well-timed pass from Lulinha (#11), getting past Svay Rieng’s Hikaru Mizuno (#6) to score. Svay Rieng quickly responded, almost capitalizing on a misjudgment by Madura’s goalkeeper, Dida (#98), though Kim Sokyuth (#16) missed the open target. Madura continued pressing and, in the 28th minute, Svay Rieng gained a penalty that Min Ratanak (#26) converted. However, a defensive error saw Mizuno collide with his own keeper, resulting in an own goal and giving Madura a 2-1 lead.

Second Half

In the second half, Svay Rieng continued dominating possession, reaching 62%, but with limited impact on goal. Despite the Cambodians' sustained ball control, Madura generated more scoring opportunities and seemed closer to extending their lead. Svay Rieng’s most promising chance came in the 56th minute with a shot by Min Ratanak, narrowly missing the post. Towards the end, Madura’s Wehrmann (#4) hit the crossbar from a free kick, and a strong shot by Dani Kouch (#10) required a sharp save from Svay Rieng’s keeper, Vireak Dara (#27).

Conclusion

While Svay Rieng controlled possession, they lacked the decisive edge to counter the Indonesians' lead. Madura's united defensive organization and better finishing saved them the day, underscoring that possession without penetration falls short against a relaxed opponent—a fair result in the end.
